Watercolor and Gouache

Where I live in Florida, you often see egrets and herons catching lizards. This unfortunate little dragon has found itself a little lower on the food chain than usual.

((I'm working on a lot of things at once, but I couldn't resist finishing and uploading this image.))

Explains why we never see dragons.

It's interesting; here in Houston there's a bridge where bats roost during the summer. Herons hang out under it and will eat any bats that fall to the ground. This reminded me of that. I guess one could say that dragons are a mix of bat and lizard, so a heron's diet does reflect this painting! I like how happy/proud the egret looks.

Thanks for sharing the bridge story, that's pretty neat! :)

Amazing work, simply gorgeous! And the lizard reminds me of this poor bunny that had been eaten by a heron.

LOVE this. I love how realistic the pose is...reminds me of so many real-life scenarios - the way an eel will wrap itself around an egret's beak, the way a mouse hanging by its tail will twist upwards to grab the perpetrator, the way an egret seems oblivious to the struggles of its food - this is REALLY well done.

Thank you! I really enjoy trying to incorporate real behaviors in my work. The egrets always struck me as having a very mechanical precision when they hunt, which only stands out all the more when they catch something that doesn't stay still!

I'm actually planning on doing some more like this, and probably not just with dragons. Plus, I've got to go and make some with actual environments. XD

Surely it could do a bit more damage than a snake or lizard?

Quite possibly, if it can manage to grab on!

Aaaw, but look at it! A little bit of a swing and it can latch onto that egret's neck and do some major damage!

(It's damnably cute, I want one.)

Sadly, egrets tend not to swallow prey that has limbs while it's still alive. Beautiful birds, but they're very brutal hunters. :(

The food chain can be pretty vicious. One can't help wondering who would win that fight, though.

Oops! That's really wonderfully executed!
And great work on the scan too, it's so hard to get all these lighter tones right!

Thank you!

I actually recently got a new scanner. It's not a terribly expensive one, though; it's an "Epson Perfection V330 Photo" scanner, and I've been finding that it really does do a good job of picking up the light colors my old scanner missed. Especially the light blues... it's kind of nice not to have to worry about adjusting my pallet to make sure the scan doesn't come out horrible!

I had never realized quite how horrible my old one was until it broke and I had to go out and buy a new one. Now I wonder how I could have waited so long! I had my other scanner for fourteen years; it really was a dinosaur! Had a "get ready for Windows '98!" sticker on it and everything. XD

I just got my new scanner today! Thanks for the info, I got the same as you I knew I couldn't go wrong! The first test is really amazing! As soon as I can I'll try some of the paintings that were giving me a lot of trouble so far. :D

:D ha yes! Mine is eight years old I think. It's not too bad and my prints I usually really close to my originals. It's just that thing with lighter colours that's annoying.

Lovely concept to this!
Also possible symbolism of fairytale things eing eaten by something that does exsist. Sort of a metephore for the imagination being devoured by harsh reality.

Haha, I read into stuff a lot. :D

Thanks! Yeah, poor little dragon. When I feel bad about putting him there I console myself by thinking that if he flaps those wings hard enough her might still get away...
